For cleaning and rejuvenation of Yamuna, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has asked the concerned agencies to work in mission mode. In a meeting of the high-powered committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at Asita East under the chairmanship of the LG, he directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to expedite the desilting of the entire 200 km radius. Along with this, the agencies have been asked to bring all the remaining drains on record including trapping of all 242 drains. The LG said that the Yamuna, which was inherited from the elders, has been handed over to the future generation.
Instructing 100 percent sewage, the LG mentioned the success of the efforts being made by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to clean the Yamuna flood plains. Over the years, clogged sewage lines due to neglect have been the biggest challenge in the way of cleaning the Yamuna. Taking serious note of the gross inaction of the Delhi Jal Board in cleaning about 200 km of trunk and peripheral sewer lines, directed to speed up the work of desilting.
The exercise to remove silt has started from the very first meeting of the high level committee. While the cleaning of 90.34 kilometer sewer line was estimated till June. In the remaining 110 km, it is to be completed by September. The LG directed the officials to complete the desilting work in mission mode for cleaning the Yamuna.
It came to the fore in the meeting that even though the pollution in Yamuna has reduced by many parameters. Despite this, the level of pollution during the last years from Najafgarh drain is high. Leave aside the time of Kovid-19 pandemic, still complete the works for cleaning and rejuvenation of Yamuna on time.
